Users may view their iPhone’s location on the Find My Map app by using Apple’s app, even if the device is offline or shut off.
Users of iPhones can use the Find My network to monitor their stolen or lost device, but they can also use it to locate an iPhone that has been turned off or offline. Users may find other devices, including iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, AirPods, AirTags, and more, with Apple’s Find My Network app. Users can monitor the position of their device, play a sound to aid in finding it, and even remotely destroy it if it cannot be found by using the Find My app or logging into iCloud via a web browser.
Apple enhanced its Find My Network feature by allowing specific iPhone models to show their location even when they are offline or turned off. This is especially helpful if someone loses track of their iPhone and it runs out of battery life, or if their iPhone gets stolen and is either turned off or placed in airplane mode. Since an iPhone cannot be located without Find My Place activated, it is important to note that this feature can only be used if it is enabled on the device prior to it being lost.
Find An iPhone If It’s Turned Off
Things You Should Know
- If you have Find My enabled on your iPhone, you can use the Find My app to view its last known location for a brief period of time, even after the phone dies.
- Turn on Notify When Found or activate Lost Mode in Find My to get a notification if someone else finds your phone and turns it on.
- You can also go to https://www.icloud.com/find/ and log in with your Apple ID to look for your phone or turn on Lost Mode.
On an iPhone, open the Settings app and select the user name located at the top to activate Find My. Press ‘Find My’ and subsequently ‘Find My iPhone’. Turn on the toggles for “Send Last Location,” “Find My Network,” and “Find My iPhone.” When an iPhone is turned off, users can still locate it with the help of the Find My Network function. When these options are turned on, users will see a banner that reads “iPhone Findable After Power Off” when they turn off their iPhone. Subsequently, the iPhone will be accessible through Find My on the user’s other devices and to those with whom the user has opted to share their location via Family Sharing.
Open the Find My app on another Apple device, such as a Mac, iPad, or another iPhone, to find an iPhone that has been turned off. The user can then receive turn-by-turn directions to the iPhone from a map that shows its location. Only ultra-wideband-capable iPhone models can be used to locate offline iPhones. These consist of the iPhone 11 and subsequent iterations, except the iPhone SE. It’s crucial to remember that consumers can only find their iPhones for a maximum of 24 hours after they turn them off or for five hours if they put them in power reserve mode.
Set Up Lost Mode On iPhone
It’s worthwhile to put an iPhone in Lost Mode if it can’t be located on the Find My iPhone map since it might help someone else get in touch with the owner. To accomplish this, choose the iPhone from the ‘Devices’ page in the Find My app on another Apple device (or login to iCloud in a browser). Navigate to “Mark as Lost” and select “Activate.” There will be a passcode creation option if the iPhone does not already have one enabled. After that, users must input the message and contact details they wish to appear on the lock screen. Enable Lost Mode by tapping ‘Activate’ once again.
‘Pending’ will show up next to the iPhone in the Devices tab on the Find My Map if it is offline. If someone else finds and charges the iPhone, the customized message will show up on the screen when it turns on. An iPhone in Lost Mode won’t show any notifications or make any sounds in relation to alarms. Calls and FaceTime calls can still be received, though. The Find My app will allow users to view the location of the iPhone once it is back online. On the other hand, the iPhone in Lost Mode will not allow the finder to access any data that is stored on the device.
How To Find A Lost iPhone That Is Turned Off
Has your iPhone vanished from sight? Remain calm. You might be able to view its last known location in the Find My app or on the iCloud website on another device, even if it’s off or its battery is dead. We’ll show you how to use iCloud or Find My to place your iPhone in Lost Mode or configure it to send a notification if it’s turned on, even if you can’t track it anymore.
Method 1
Using Find My or iCloud
- Open the Find My app on an Apple device. If you have Find My enabled on your lost iPhone, you may be able to see your phone’s last known location in the Find My app even if your phone is powered down, offline, or dead. To get started, open the Find My app on another Apple device that’s logged into the same Apple ID.
-
- If you don’t have access to an Apple device, visit https://www.icloud.com/find/ in a web browser instead. Log in with the same Apple ID you used to set up your lost iPhone.
- You can also use Find My on a family member’s iPhone, iPad, or Mac if you have set up Family Sharing and chosen to share your location with them.
- Or, use the Help a Friend feature under the Me tab in Find My on a friend’s phone to look for your phone in iCloud.
- The Find My app’s icon looks like a green and blue radar display.
- Tap the Devices tab. You’ll see this tab at the bottom of the Find My screen. When you tap it, you’ll see a map showing the approximate locations of all the devices with Find My enabled that are linked to your account.
-
- If you don’t see your iPhone on the map, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see a list of your devices.
- On iCloud, look at the map to see if your iPhone’s location is displayed there. If you don’t see it, click All Devices at the top of the Find Devices window and click your iPhone in the list.
- Check if your phone’s last known location is visible. According to Apple, the Find My iPhone app will display your iPhone’s last known location for up to 7 days after your phone goes offline or dies. The iCloud website will only display the last known location for up to 24 hours. If your phone died recently and you can still see its location, you may be able to find it by going to the location displayed on the map.
-
- Pull up your device list from the bottom of the screen and press on your iPhone to see more precise location data. It will include the last known location’s address and the time that information was sent.
- Click the phone in the All Devices menu on iCloud. If a place is accessible, the map will enlarge to show its exact location.
- It’s possible that too much time has gone by since your phone went offline if you are unable to see where your device is. It’s also possible that you didn’t activate every Find My function.
- Proceed to either Enabling Notify When Found or Reporting Your iPhone Lost if you are quite certain that Find My is enabled on your phone.
- Ask a friend to help you find your phone using Find My. The Find My app does not allow your friends to assist you directly, but it does have a feature that allows you to login to your iCloud account using the app on a friend’s phone. If you don’t have access to a computer or another device that is linked to your Apple ID, this is a wonderful backup plan. This is how you do it:
-
- On their phone, ask your friend to launch the Find Me app.
- In the bottom right corner of the screen, tap Me.
- Navigate to the bottom of the screen and select “Help a Friend.” This will cause Safari to open the iCloud Find Devices page.
- Using the Apple ID connected to your misplaced iPhone, tap Sign In. From there, you may activate Notify When Found, place your iPhone in Lost Mode, and see if the location of your phone is shown on the map.
Method 2
Enabling Notify When Found
- Open the Find My app. The Notify When Found setting will cause your iPhone to send a notification if it comes online again and Find My is able to detect its location. This is a good option if you think someone else might find your phone and turn it on. To turn it on, open the Find My app on an Apple device that’s logged into the same Apple ID as your iPhone.
-
- You can also visit https://www.icloud.com/find/ in a web browser on any device and sign in with your Apple ID and password.
- Tap the Devices tab. It’s at the bottom of the app screen.
-
- If you’re using the iCloud website, click All Devices at the top of the map screen.
- Select your iPhone from the list of devices. Pull up the list of all your devices from the bottom of the screen if it isn’t already open. Tap on your missing iPhone.
-
- On the iCloud website, find and click your phone in the drop-down menu that appears when you click All Devices.
- Toggle on Notify When Found. You’ll see this option under the Notifications header. Toggle the switch next to Notify When Found so it’s in the On position.
-
- Click the Notify Me option in iCloud, which is located beneath your iPhone’s photo.
- You’ll receive a notification from Find My on any linked Apple devices the next time your misplaced iPhone is powered on and online.
