The first Apple watch dubbed Series 0, was released on April 24, 2015. It had a rounded square OLED display, a digital crown, and an array of swappable bands. The watch was marketed as an extension of the iPhone and had limited features such as 9 watch faces and 20 stock apps.
Series 1 and Series 2: Released in September 2016, these watches had a faster processor, improved water resistance, and built-in GPS.
Series 3: Released in September 2017, this watch had cellular connectivity, which allowed users to make calls and send texts without their iPhone.
Series 4: Released in September 2018, this watch had a larger display, improved heart rate monitoring, and fall detection.
Series 5: Released in September 2019, this watch had an always-on display, a built-in compass, and international emergency calling.
Series 6: Released in September 2020, this watch had a blood oxygen sensor, an always-on altimeter, and faster charging.
Series 7: Released in September 2021, this watch had a larger display with thinner borders, faster charging time, and full QWERTY keyboard support.
Series 8, SE (second generation), and Ultra: Apple released these 3 watches in 2022
Series 8: This watch comes with an S8 chip, which offers built-in GPS, a high g-force accelerometer that allows for the company’s car crash detection, and features including Fall Detection and international emergency calling on board.
2nd Gen (Apple Watch SE): The Apple Watch SE has the same offerings as the Apple Watch Series 8. In addition to existing tools like Emergency SOS and Fall Detection, both watches come with a newer Crash Detection capability.
Ultra: The watch has a robust titanium case, precision dual-frequency GPS, up to 36 hours of battery life, and 3 specialized bands made for athletes and adventurers of all kinds.
Series 9: Apple recently announced the release of the Apple Watch Series 9. The new watch comes with an S9 SiP chip that delivers system-wide improvements and brand-new features. It also has a new double tap gesture and on-device Siri with the ability to access and log health data privately and securely. Additionally, the watch has a brighter display and Precision Finding for iPhone. The Apple Watch Series 9 is available for pre-order starting from September 12, 2023, and will be available for purchase from September 22, 2023.
It’s fascinating to see how far the Apple Watch has come since its inception. With each iteration, Apple has added new features that have made the watch more useful and versatile. It will be interesting to see what new features Apple adds to future versions of the watch.
